PCS to Corporate America: Top 5 Podcasts of 2022
We launched our bi-weekly podcast on May 26, 2016. We started the podcast to try and show JMOs what it was like to work in corporate America by featuring Cameron-Brooks alumni and having discussions with them about their career path, leadership experience, and a host of other topics and ideas that give JMOs a “behind the scenes” view of what life may look like outside of the military. As I am typing this, we just launched our 162nd episode, and I am proud to say our content has grown and expanded through the years. Of course, we still feature successful alumni. Still, starting with our centennial episode, where we interviewed our companies founders, Roger Cameron and Rene Brooks, we have made a concerted effort to broaden the scope of the podcast also to feature different authors, offer career advice, answer questions that JMOs face as they are considering a transition and provide insight into interviewing. To that end, here is a list of the Top 5 Cameron-Brooks podcasts for 2022.
Episode 145 – How Much Can I Make? In this Episode, Transition Coach Rob Davis discusses what factors play into salary, the varieties and types of compensation, and other variables that can play into compensation when transitioning to Corporate America.
Episode 139 – Tips on Career Management (from 39 Years of Experience) In this episode, Joel Junker leads a round table discussion with Melodie Nye, Carl Case, and Mike DeBock. Those three Cameron-Brooks alumni have a combined 39 years of experience and share some valuable tips around career management. Toward the end of the episode, they engage in a robust dialogue about the value of an MBA.
Episode 140 – Does Work/Life Balance Exist? This is a continuation of Episode 139 with Melodie, Carl, and Mike. In this part of the conversation, they delve deep into the concept of work/life balance and self-development. We also list all of the resources that these alumni mentioned throughout the discussion in the show notes.
Episode 141 – Internships vs. Recruiting Firms. What is Right For You? This was a hot topic in 2022. With the inception of the DoD Skillbridge program, officers (as well as enlisted personnel and spouses) have another means to transition from the military. In this episode (and the next), we explore both options and objectively analyze each path.
Episode 148 – Career Journey Around the World Steve Joachim is a Cameron-Brooks alumnus from 2003. This is actually the second podcast on which Steve is featured. He was on Episode 8 in 2016. In Episode 148, we check back in on Steve and focus on better understanding his career decision and some of the moves that took him all over the world as a leader in the medical device industry.
If you are looking for bonus context, please allow me to recommend the “Chuck Series.” Cameron-Brooks CEO, Chuck Alvarez, met with Cameron-Brooks Senior Vice President Joel Junker in late 2020 to look back at 2020 and look forward to 2021. The focus of the episode was to discuss how Corporate America handled hiring talent during the pandemic, and they also gave advice on career management for JMOs. That conversation spawned a series of topical podcasts, as well as economic updates. They are Episodes 114, 116, 118, 130 and 138. On December 15, 2022, Chuck and Joel will once again meet to look back on the year and look forward to the next. That episode will surely include hot topics like inflation and interest rates and how all that plays into the JMO transition. That will be Episode 164 and will launch on January 10, 2023.
