JMO Transition Trends: April 2023 Career Conference
It is hard to believe the first quarter of 2023 is almost in the books! It feels like 2023 just got here. Let’s take a look at the state of JMO transition trends as it relates to the economy. As of this blog post, we are working very diligently to prepare for our second Career Conference of the year!
Similar to the blog I posted for the January Career Conference, we have seen and continue to see some tightening in the economy, meaning there is some slowdown in hiring in certain sectors and industries. Does that mean companies have stopped hiring? Absolutely not. But they have “raised the bar” when it comes to who they pursue and hire. An extra level to this is transitioning into a new industry where companies are less familiar with your background, like a JMO transitioning to Corporate America. So, if you are a JMO who is transitioning or thinking of transitioning this year, am I suggesting that you should reconsider? Again, absolutely not. But it is important that you approach the interview process and career search with the economy in mind! This is not 2021 or 2022, where we saw many remote positions, and companies were willing to bend a bit more on specific locations to make accommodations for the candidate because the need to hire was so great from coming out of the pandemic. The “sport” we are playing in 2023 has changed.
There are plenty of opportunities out there for JMOs wanting to transition to the business world, especially for those that are well prepared, want to do a broad career search, and are willing to be flexible on location. That combination provides the very best chance to find a high-quality company in a developmental position where they can launch their business careers successfully and thrive. This is an economy where it is more about quality over quantity. In other words, it’s important to focus on the quality of the company and having a quality interview to get pursued and hired versus worrying about why I don’t have as many interviews as maybe my colleague who transitioned last year.
My colleague, Joel Junker, recently interviewed our CEO, Chuck Alvarez, to review JMO to business career transition best practices, get his perspective on the year that was, and discuss the outlook for 2023. I encourage any JMO considering a transition to Corporate America to listen to the first part of that interview here and here.
As I type this blog post, the average number of interviews for the January Career Conference is sitting at just over 9 per candidate, with over 30 distinct companies and nearly 40 hiring groups participating in the Conference. We are very excited about the opportunities awaiting our candidates for the April Conference.
